What's New
Tasha Cook, C.P.I.* is teaching Pilates in the Roosevelt neighborhood of Seattle
*C.P.I.--Certified Pilates Instructor
This picture is of Joe Pilates' studio in New York City, circa 1950. Joe designed the equipment himself. Notice how these pieces of equipment (called Reformers) have claw foot legs! Joe's wife, Clara, is in the nurse's uniform. I usually don't dress like these folks when I teach.
"Contrology develops the body uniformly, corrects wrong postures, restores physical vitality, invigorates the mind, and elevates the spirit."
--Joseph H. Pilates, from his book Return to Life Through Contrology. 'Contrology' is the name Joe used for his system of exercise.

What is Pilates?
Joseph H. Pilates developed a system of exercise that strengthens the core muscles of the torso, allowing greater control and flexibility throughout the body. His system is done on the mat and various pieces of specially designed equipment. The equipment uses springs and your own body weight as resistance. Each exercise requires specific use of the abdominal muscles, in conjunction with other parts of the body. The goal is to develop the body uniformly and safely, with special attention to posture, alignment, correct usage and function. Proper pilates training will engender long-lasting effects in all areas of your physical life.
